Historic Naples Tradition Ready for One Last Race Before Upgrade

Posted on May 5, 2017

The 2016 Great Dock Canoe Race was supposed to be the end-all party of the 40 year-old Naples tradition held at the Naples City Dock at Crayton Cove each spring. However, organizers rallied for yet another year and on Saturday, the 41st Annual Great Dock Canoe Race will take place at the soon to be renovated city dock and Naples residents could not be happier.

In fact, the organizers moved the race up one week prior to the original schedule race date because the city will begin renovation on the dock on Monday. Built in 1929, the City Dock will receive a much needed, $6.5 million dollar makeover over the next nine months.

The City Dock is just north of the Naples Yacht Club and just steps around the corner from The Dock Restaurant, where spectators can grab a few bites and cocktails or brews and still view the starts and finishes of the 3-mile canoe races on the Gordon River. It’s from there that owner Vin DePasquale launched the idea for this event in 1976, a year before it started. Thousands of spectators have long crammed the City Dock for some sun and a great view of the races and aqua life.
